Half-Hearted

Do you ever get into a funk? The dictionary defines a funk as “a dejected mood.”  When I am in a funk, I feel very dispirited. I am out of sorts. I lack energy. I have a hard time focusing.

I have found that when I am in a funk, despite my frustrating state, I still try to maintain my responsibilities and seek to accomplish much-needed tasks. However, my efforts are not my best. I recognize within myself that I am only giving half of what I normally would—half of my energy, half of my enthusiasm and half of my best intentions. The results I experience are always disappointing to me, and to others.

Jeremiah 29:13 states, “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” God wants our best. He knows our thoughts, attitudes, and motives. He looks within our hearts and knows when we are being half-hearted. God makes it clear to us that He wants us to give with our whole heart.

Do you ever feel disconnected to God? Do you feel you are having a tough time hearing Him? Are you struggling to see His hand in your life?

When I begin to feel distant from God, I pray and ask for Him to create in me a clean heart–one that is open, fresh, and new. I ask the Lord to plant a new eagerness and desire in my heart for His goodness, kindness, grace, and love. God is faithful and He will provide to us what we need to live more closely to Him.

Lord, give us the ears to hear, and the eyes to see, the beauty, truth, and bounty you have for us as we learn to trust you more.  Amen.
