Bring The Light

In I John 1:5, the disciple penned these timeless words, “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.”

How do we experience darkness today? I believe that darkness creeps into our lives in three primary ways: negativity, worry and evil.

Thankfully, God’s light was made manifest in Jesus Christ whose light helps dispel darkness to conquer these attitudes and situations.

His light brings hope and positive thinking to the negative. Isaiah 40 reminds us that “They who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.”

The more God renews our strength, the more we can confidently trust Him. The greater our trust, the more we experience how He dispels the downward spiral of negative thinking, which is destructive and unproductive.

His light brings direct access to prayer to combat worry. The Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:6-7, “Be anxious for nothing…let your requests be made known to God in prayer; and the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

The more we pray, the less we worry.  Prayer has power; worry is powerless. It is futile. It gets us nowhere.  But prayer brings peace, the kind of peace that the world simply does not understand.  It is a peace despite our circumstances.  Thus, His light helps bring peace to us in the midst of tragedy, chaos and heartbreak.

His light brings goodness to overcome evil.  In Romans 12, The apostle Paul wrote to the church in Rome, “Do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Evil exists in the world. It prompts humans to create unthinkable crimes against one another, and it fosters tyrants to bring war and destruction upon innocent people. God’s light brings goodness which is the hope for humanity.  We must each bring goodness, in whatever ways we can, to combat the onslaught of evil.  We must pray fervently for God’s light to shine brightly in the dark areas in the world, and in our lives.
