WOW Days

Life is filled with many different types of days. There are “Drudgery Days” which usually involve cleaning out a closet or reorganizing the garage.  Necessary, but no fun at all. Then there are “Joyful Days” where you get to see an old friend and meet for lunch, or you complete a big project at work, and it was successful. You feel good about yourself and life.

But there is nothing comparable to the experience of a “Wow Day.” These do not happen often, but when they do, you remember it forever. Its rarity is part of its charm.  A “Wow Day” is when something occurs that takes your breath away. It is unexpected and spontaneous. It’s when God reaches down, and just somehow in His majesty, it seems he aligns the sun, the moon and the stars and a miraculous moment leaps out at you.

A “Wow Day” stops you in your tracks. It immediately makes your “Top Five Days Ever” list.  It immediately becomes hardwired in your brain. It is a moment that years later continues to bring you joy, a sense of wonder and awe by simply reflecting upon it.

Two years ago, our large extended family spent a weekend in May celebrating the 75th wedding anniversary of my in-laws. Children, spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews made the trek to Tampa for the time we would spend together and honor this precious couple whose love had stood the test of time. Activities were planned, and everyone eagerly participated.

My “Wow Day” occurred while we were on a large boat, cruising upon Tampa Bay, on a gorgeous afternoon.  I noticed that dolphins began jumping in our wake as I stood in the very back, with my precious mother-in-law and my two sons. It only lasted like one minute, but miraculously, the moment I clicked my camera was the precise second that captured the grandeur of this beautiful creature leaping toward the sky.  We were spellbound. We were silent. We were moved and it was a holy moment.

Psalm 146 proclaims “Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures!”  A “Wow Day” indeed.
